The lay precepts include the Five Precepts (or the sometimes called five moral precepts), the Eight Abstentious Precepts and the Bodhisattva Precepts. Listed below are the Five Precepts;

The Five Buddhist Precepts

1. Refrain from taking life.

Do not kill any living being.

2. Refrain from taking what is not given.

Do not steal anything.

3. Refrain from the misuse of the senses.

Avoid any action which will lead to too much stimulation of senses.

4. Refrain from wrong speech.

The practice of all the bodhisattvas is never to speak ill of others who have embarked upon the greater vehicle, or if, under the influence of destructive emotions, we speak of other bodhisattvas failings, it is us who are at fault.

5. Refrain from intoxicants that cloud the mind.

Do not partake in anything which will not help you to think clearly.
