Oceans of the world

An ocean is a body of saltwater covering most of the surface of the earth. All the oceans connect, and they cover 70% of the surface of our planet.
An ocean is different to a sea in that seas are usually smaller than oceans and are usually located where the land and ocean meet and therefore the seas enclosed in part by land.

Fun fact: Scientists estimate that over 50 percent of the oxygen production on Earth comes from marine photosynthesis in our oceans.
The oceans contain most of the life in our world and life started in the ocean, the oceans control the temperature and climate of the Earth.
On average, the five oceans of the world have a salinity of 3.5 percent. However, regions like the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, and the Bay of Bengal have higher salinity levels.

The Five Oceans

01. The Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean covering approximately 30 percent of the global ocean and has a volume of approx. 670 million km cubed and an area of 161 km squared.
The Pacific Ocean is made up of the following seas; the Bali Sea, Bering Sea, Bering Strait, Coral Sea, East China Sea, Gulf of Alaska, Gulf of Tonkin, Philippine Sea, Sea of Japan, Sea of Okhotsk, South China Sea, and the Tasman Sea.
Fun fact: The Pacific is the deepest ocean, and contains the Mariana Trench which has a depth of 10,920 meters.

02. The Atlantic Ocean.

The Atlantic Ocean has a volume of approx. 310 million km cubed and an area of 85 km squared.
The Atlantic Ocean is made up of the following seas; the Baltic Sea, Black Sea, Caribbean Sea, Davis Strait, Denmark Strait, part of the Drake Passage, Gulf of Mexico, Labrador Sea, Mediterranean Sea, North Sea, Norwegian Sea, and most of the Scotia Sea;
Fun fact: The Atlantic is the saltiest ocean.

03. The Indian Ocean.

The Indian Ocean covers approximately 20 percent of the global ocean and has a volume of approx. 264 million km cubed and an area of 71 km squared.
The Indian Ocean is made up of the following seas; the Andaman Sea, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Flores Sea, Great Australian Bight, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, Java Sea, Mozambique Channel, Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Savu Sea, Strait of Malacca, and Timor Sea.
Fun fact: The Indian Ocean is the warmest ocean.

04. The Southern Ocean.

The Southern Ocean or Antarctic Ocean, has a volume of approx. 71 million km cubed and an area of 22 km squared.
The Southern Ocean is made up of the following seas; the Amundsen Sea, Bellingshausen Sea, part of the Drake Passage, Ross Sea, a small part of the Scotia Sea, and the Weddell Sea.
Fun fact: Huge icebergs frequent the Southern Ocean and we do not mean lettuces.

05. The Arctic Ocean.

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest ocean and has a volume of approx. 19 million km cubed and an area of 16 km squared.
The Arctic Ocean is made up of the following seas; the Baffin Bay, Barents Sea, Beaufort Sea, Chukchi Sea, East Siberian Sea, Greenland Sea, Hudson Bay , Hudson Strait, Kara Sea, Laptev Sea, and the Northwest Passage.
Fun fact: The Arctic Ocean is the shallowest ocean.
