The four marks of the Church act as an antidote to certain heresies that had crept into the Church in its early history.

The four marks were formulated at the First and Second Ecumenical Councils held in Nicea and Constantinople, respectively. They are a creedal form of belief in the Church.
The Second Council elaborated on the Nicene Creed, established by the First Council adding to the end a section that included the affirmation the we they believe in these four marks of the Church.

The Four Marks Of The Church

01. The church is one, and in unity.

There is one Church, not many and it is united, not divided. We share the same faith and sacraments.

02. The church is Holy, a Sanctity.

The church is holy because it was founded by Jesus Christ and teaches holy doctrine it has been set apart for a special purpose by and for God.

03. The church is Catholic.

The Church is universal, full, complete, and all-embracing. For all people, at all times.

04. The church is Apostolic.

Just as the Son was sent by the Father, and the Spirit sent by the Son, the Church has been sent by the Holy Trinity into the world, the Church is apostolic because it was founded by Jesus who entrusted His authority to the apostles. This authority has then been handed on from bishop to bishop.
