Heigh ho, Heigh ho, it is home from work we go. If you dig, dig, dig with a shovel or a pick you may get a list of names for the seven dwarfs from Snow White and the seven dwarfs all of whom worked in a diamond mine!

The seven dwarfs named here and who sing the mine song feature in the Walt Disney film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs which was Disney’s first animated feature film, the film was shown first in 1937 and is based on a Grimm Bothers’ fairy tale from 1812. The dwarfs were not named in Grimm’s tales but got a few different and original names in an early play from 1917 like Blick, Flick, Glick, Snick, Plick, Whick and Quee (which Walt saw and was inspired by when he was 15 years old), and then were finally named with the names we now know best in his animated film. The film took four and a half years to complete which may explain why it is so great. This Grimm brother’s classic fairy tale features an evil queen with a magic mirror which keeps saying the princess Snow White is the fairest in the land (her name, and maybe the basis for her complexion came from the fact she was born when it was snowing), the evil queen is not too happy with that, and Snow White is sent to the forest. In the forest Snow White finds the seven dwarfs, who promise to look after her, and do so with a lovely set of songs to accompany. Jealous of Snow White’s beauty, the wicked queen orders the murder of her innocent stepdaughter, and later discovers that Snow White is still alive and hiding in a cottage with seven friendly little miners. Disguising herself as a hag, the queen brings a poisoned apple to Snow White, who falls into a deep sleep that can be broken only by a kiss from the prince. Walt had the idea to name the seven dwarfs such that their names would reflect the personalities they were creating. An emotional roller coaster, the film tugs at the heart strings, despite a legend from Switzerland and despite the British comedy Goodies rendition, no dwarf nor Snow White dies in the film. The name of the leader of the seven dwarfs. Doc sports a yellow-brown tunic, wears glasses and tends to jumble up his words. At the mine, his job is to check the gems and diamonds to make sure they are authentic. Bossy sometimes authoritarian he can be trusted to lead, though prone sometimes to a little befuddlement. Doc was voiced by Roy Atwell in the movie.
The name of the bad-tempered dwarf with a rather big nose. The second most popular dwarf Grumpy had a soft spot for Snow White, though he vehemently denied it. It was Grumpy that lead the dwarfs on the quest to rescue Snow White. Grumpy has a red hat, a red tunic, a know-it-all attitude and can sometimes be quite stubborn and is prone to apologetic rages. The name of the jovial dwarf, always laughing. Happy into the cheerful, bubbly dwarf. He has a great love for food is always smiling and is the chubbiest of the dwarfs. Happy is voiced by Otis Harlan in the movie.
The name of the always tired dwarf. Sleepy is constantly on the verge of dozing off, he is though actually the most observant of all the dwarfs and is not scared of hard work. Sleepy wears a yellow-brown tunic. Sleepy is voiced by Pinto Colvig in the movie.
A dwarf who is always sneezing. Perhaps the friendliest of the dwarfs, he often joins Dopey in his playful antics and can sneeze at the most unexpected of times. Billy Gilbert voices the character of the dwarf Sneezy in the movie.
The name of the very shy and kind-hearted dwarf. Bashful dwarf is the most romantic of the dwarfs, and even has a small crush on Snow White herself. Bashful is dreamy-eyed and always blushing and fluttering his eyelids. Bashful has a magenta cap and a purple tunic. Bashful was created by Scotty Mattraw.
The name of the mute dwarf prone to accidents. The last dwarf to be named, Dopey was the most popular. Dopey is the only dwarf without a beard and has a bumbling personality and endearing demeanour. Dopey was also the only dwarf not to speak, is bald, wears a purple hat and an oversized green tunic, and is prone to innocent silliness. Dopey was not voiced by anyone in the movie due to him never speaking.
